INTERIOR
The main door opens into the lower floor
of an open-plan room which comprises the spacious living room/
kitchen area with hand-crafted wooden units and a decorative
wood burning antique-style stove. One of the first things you notice when
stepping into this high-ceilinged room, are the black and
white checked floor tiles and the amazing mural of winged
cherubs and clouds painted on the ceiling. There is a large
dining table, built-in sofa seating under the windows and
several oil lamps and candelabras hanging on the walls, which
add a touch from the olden days. The
octagonal shape of the building is carried through to the
inside with each sea-facing side boasting a tall window with
a stained glass arch at the top. To the rear of the room is
a WC/shower and a stairway near the front entrance leads to
the upper gallery, which is made from beams of wood and has
two sleeping areas - one with a double bed and one with two
single beds. Both are open to the living room underneath with a sliding door between them for privacy. The second bedroom with two single beds is in a separate stone building, tunnel
shaped and with unique cave-painting style chalk drawings
on the ceiling, which blend well with the rest of the castle.
It is comfortably furnished and has en-suite w/c shower room
and the same astonishing views of pool and sea. A back door
leads out to a pleasant outdoor dining area with barbeque,
sink and dining table. There is also a spacious roof terrace,
accessible by stone steps on the side of the house, which
offers a 180' degree sea view and lots of sun. Both buildings
are equipped with air-conditioning.
SURROUNDINGS
Pyrgos House is an approximate 20-minute drive from
Skopelos town with about half of it on a rough and stony
dirt track that winds to the house. The hillsides are covered with
olive groves and herds of goats and the views are striking
down to the nearby beach of Glysteri with its turquoise
blue waters. This beach is about a 10-minute drive from
the house and has a taverna at the waters' edge, which
is open from mid-May to mid-September. Pyrgos house
is also ideal for walkers as there are numerous small
roads and trails in the surrounding hillsides. The walk
to Glysteri beach takes approximately 20 minutes and
about 45 minutes to town. There is also a small path
down to the rocks by the sea just below the house, which
is about a 10-minute walk.
EXTERIOR
Pyrgos is a very unusual house, set
on a rocky promontory jutting out into the sea on the
same coast as Skopelos town. It has breathtaking views
for miles up the 'wild' side of the island to the left,
the mountains and monasteries to the right and a panoramic
sea view straight ahead towards the neighbouring island
of Alonissos and The National Marine Park of Greece.
The house itself has been designed to look like a medieval
castle, built out of local stone, and appears to have
been guarding the nearby town for centuries. The pool
is ideally situated at the edge of the property toward
the sea giving it outstanding views and looking as if
it 'blends' into the horizon. A set of leaping dolphins
is cleverly painting into the bottom. Both owners are local artists and
their imagination is evidenced by the artistic creations
scattered about the property.
Near the entrance gate
is a tall piece of modern art made from iron and below
the house is a brick built pyramid. There are plenty
of opportunity for outdoor dining with these stunning
views and lots of room for sitting or lounging in the
sun on the terrace surrounding the pool. This
private spot is ideal for nature lovers who want to get away from the hectic pace of life and really feel
like they've gone back in time. With the sun rising in front of the house, peeking over the mountaintops,
the view is truly inspiring.
SUITABILITY
This house is a wonderful spot for one or
two couples looking for a romantic escape with the added
touch of fantasy and fun. It is also great for families
with children who can play and use their imagination
to the fullest in this distinctive house and dreamy
setting.
