His jealous wife Hera transformed Zeus into a governess and deceived Semeli by convincing her to ask Zeus to appear before her in all his glory. Hera's wish was fulfilled, and as a result Semeli was thunderstruck since Zeus appeared before her surrounded by lightning and thunder.

Just before she died, Semeli brought Dionysus to life who after growing up, descended to the Nether world and brought Semeli back to life making her his inseparable companion ever since. He also included her in his theatrical ensemble together with the Satyrs, Seilens and Bacheans. In Mykonos, Dionysus and Semeli were the most worshipped Olympian Gods.
