Oia, Santorini - The world’s most famous sunset
At the northernmost caldera of Santorini island lays the traditional village of Oia (Ia), one of the top travel destinations worldwide. Its architecture, its unique sunsets and its breathtaking volcanic landscape are the main points of attraction for most travelers.
Being
highly touristic, Oia, with its dramatic scenery, gathers hundreds of tourists daily, to
admire the world’s most famous sunset. Hundreds of cameras are used to capture what only the eyes can truly see. Depending on the position, one can admire the Thirassia Island, Aspronissi, Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni and the caldera of Imerovigli. The unique variety of colours and the unlimited view will carve lifetime memories.
Its architecture defines the island and is very different from the standard Cycladic architecture. Many of the houses, known as cave houses, are partially built in the volcanic ground with only the front part of the house visible. These houses were also used as storage space, keeping a very cool temperature even during the hotest summer.
Evidence of the rich and glorious historical path of the island can be found in the
Naval Maritime Museum of Oia.
